Ironic: Teacher pension funds invested in gun makers

Interesting that the people who supervise investments for the nation's massive teacher unions did not have a problem investing in gun manufacturers before the school massacre in Connecticut. Now they're scrambling to divest their portfolios.

From The Associated Press:
For years, the gun industry has been a reliable investment, attracting tens of millions of dollars from some of the nation’s largest retirement funds. The firearms business has been strong, driven by relaxed laws for carrying concealed handguns and by buyers who feared that tighter gun restrictions were more likely under President Obama.

But after the bloodbath in Connecticut, the practice is under review in at least four states, including two of the most populous, California and New York.
I guess as long as the pension funds were returning a solid profit, it didn't matter where the money was placed? What say you liberals?

Columnist: It's not the 'gun culture,' it's the American culture

Excellent column by J.D. Mullane about the root causes of the evil that visited Sandy Hook, Conn., last Friday:
To see the Sandy Hook massacre as unique to its circumstances, apart from all the others, is to avoid an uncomfortable topic. What feeds and enables this madness is not the “gun culture.” It’s the American culture.

We’ve cheapened human life. We snuff it when it is helpless and inconvenient. In three states (so far) we legally euthanize it when it is old, infirm and a burden.

The cheapness of human life permeates our popular entertainment. With movies, television and song lyrics, nihilism is, literally, in the air.

Evil is glamorized. Check the thrill-kill video games “Modern Warfare,” “Resident Evil 6 — You Are Dead,” “Sleeping Dogs” or “TheWitcher 2.” The violence is barbaric.

Yet, on Dec. 25, millions of these games will be presented as gifts to young people who will play them on Christmas Day.

Who seriously argues that this stuff has little influence on attitudes and behaviors?

Breaking news from The Associated Press for all the idiots who voted for Obama: Your medical plan is facing an unexpected expense, so you probably are, too. It’s a new, $63-per-head fee to cushion the cost of covering people with pre-existing conditions under President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul.
